I've been living in Mexico for all of my life, and I've lived or at least stayed at Mexico City for years. At least a third part of my life. I have never truly worried about theft or robbery. I'm tall, big, and can look meneacing if needed.
Well, there is a first time for everything, specially the bad stuff.
People are afraid of "pirate" taxi cabs. I don't: the driver needs money to feed a family, so the worst a pirate taxi could do is to charge you extra money. But sometimes people would use a taxi cab to lure people into undefendable positions, like being seated between two armed persons. It happened like that.
This time there was little I could have done, and fortunately they didn't get violent once I stayed calm and cooperative. Giving them no reason to harm me, and doing my best to look afraid (which was quite convinging since I did was a little afraid) nothing more happened.
Nothing, save little things like loosing a cell phone or two, credit cards, one or two id cards, an usb memory with a half-baked thesis...
They didn't like my ugly, sand colored hat, so I got to keep it.
Banks solved the cards problem yesterday. Cell company, in the other hand, was a bit more complicated with the suspension, and now the change of equipment.
The worst part of all: I'd rather not tell my girlfriend, because she's already too scared of Mexico City, and I don't want to scare her some more. After all, nothing truly bad happened.
